The Response of the Jinn to Surah Ar-Rahman: A Reminder of Allah’s Blessings
Introduction
Surah Ar-Rahman is often called “The Bride of the Qur’an” (‘Aroos al-Qur’an). It is a chapter filled with reminders of Allah’s infinite mercy and countless blessings. The Surah repeatedly poses the rhetorical question:
فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
“So which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?” (Surah Ar-Rahman, 55:13)
This verse, repeated 31 times, serves as a powerful reminder to both mankind and jinn about the endless favors of Allah.
But did you know that when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this Surah, the jinn responded to these verses more appropriately than many humans?
The Prophetic Narration
Imam at-Tirmidhi narrated from Jabir ibn ‘Abdillah (رضي الله عنه):
عن جابر بن عبد الله رضي الله عنه قال: خرج رسول الله ﷺ على أصحابه فقرأ عليهم سورة الرحمن من أولها إلى آخرها فسكتوا فقال: لقد قرأتها على الجن ليلة الجن فكانوا أحسن مردوداً منكم، كنت كلما أتيت على قوله: فبأي آلاء ربكما تكذبان قالوا: لا بشيء من نعمك ربنا نكذب فلك الحمد.
(Sunan at-Tirmidhi, no. 3291 – Hasan Sahih)
Translation:
Jabir ibn ‘Abdillah reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to his companions and recited Surah Ar-Rahman from beginning to end, and they remained silent. The Prophet ﷺ said: “I recited it to the jinn on the night of the jinn, and they responded better than you. Every time I came to the verse: ‘So which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?’ they said: ‘We do not deny any of Your favors, our Lord, and for You is all praise.’”

لَا بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ نِعَمِكَ رَبَّنَا نُكَذِّبُ، فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ
“We do not deny any of Your blessings, our Lord; for You is all praise.”
May Allah make us among those who are grateful and mindful of His endless favors.

Surat Ar-Rahman dan Jawaban Jin ketika Nabi Membacanya
Keindahan Surat Ar-Rahman
Surat Ar-Rahman dikenal sebagai “Pengantin Al-Qur’an” (عروس القرآن) karena keindahan bahasanya, pengulangan ayatnya, dan kedalaman maknanya. Allah menegaskan nikmat-nikmat-Nya dengan berulang kali bertanya:
فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
“Maka nikmat Tuhanmu yang manakah yang kamu dustakan?” (QS. Ar-Rahman [55]: 13)
Ayat ini diulang sebanyak 31 kali dalam surat tersebut, mengingatkan manusia dan jin tentang betapa banyak nikmat Allah yang wajib disyukuri.
Hadis tentang Jawaban Jin
Diriwayatkan dalam sebuah hadis shahih, ketika Rasulullah ﷺ membacakan Surat Ar-Rahman kepada para sahabat, beliau berhenti sejenak setelah ayat فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ dan bersabda bahwa jin lebih baik dalam menjawab ayat itu dibanding manusia.
Dalam hadis riwayat At-Tirmidzi:
عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ: خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةَ الرَّحْمَنِ مِنْ أَوَّلِهَا إِلَى آخِرِهَا، فَسَكَتُوا، فَقَالَ: "لَقَدْ قَرَأْتُهَا عَلَى الْجِنِّ لَيْلَةَ الْجِنِّ، فَكَانُوا أَحْسَنَ مَرْدُودًا مِنْكُمْ، كُنْتُ كُلَّمَا أَتَيْتُ عَلَى قَوْلِهِ: فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ قَالُوا: لَا بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ نِعَمِ رَبِّنَا نُكَذِّبُ، فَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ"
(رواه الترمذي، وصححه الألباني)
Artinya:
Jabir berkata: Rasulullah ﷺ keluar menemui para sahabat, lalu membacakan kepada mereka Surat Ar-Rahman dari awal sampai akhir. Mereka diam saja. Rasulullah bersabda:
"Aku telah membacakannya kepada kaum jin pada malam pertemuan dengan jin. Mereka menjawab lebih baik daripada kalian. Setiap kali aku membaca ayat: فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ, mereka menjawab: ‘Tidak ada satu pun dari nikmat Tuhan kami yang kami dustakan. Segala puji bagi-Mu, ya Allah.’"
(HR. At-Tirmidzi, dinyatakan shahih oleh Al-Albani)
Hikmah yang Bisa Dipetik
- Jin pun mengakui nikmat Allah – Mereka langsung merespons ayat dengan penuh syukur, sedangkan manusia seringkali lalai.
- Syukur adalah kewajiban hamba – Mengingatkan bahwa setiap nikmat, besar maupun kecil, harus diakui dan dipuji kembali kepada Allah.
- Belajar dari jin dalam ketaatan – Meski mereka dari golongan berbeda, sikap mereka bisa menjadi pelajaran bahwa mendengar ayat Allah seharusnya menggerakkan hati dan lisan untuk bersyukur.
Penutup
Surat Ar-Rahman mengajarkan kita untuk selalu ingat dan bersyukur atas setiap karunia Allah. Jangan sampai manusia, yang lebih dimuliakan, kalah dari jin dalam menyikapi ayat-ayat Allah.
Semoga kita bisa menjawab setiap kali membaca ayat:
فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
dengan penuh kesadaran:
"Tidak ada satu pun nikmat-Mu yang kami dustakan, ya Allah. Segala puji bagi-Mu."
